Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, usually referred to as EMs, assist the priest and deacon in distributing the Body of Christ and the Blood of Christ at Mass and to the sick and homebound.  Whether at Mass or in other special situations, the EM enables the recipient to share more deeply in the Body and/or Blood of Christ and thereby experience the great love of the Triune God - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

This ministry came about as a result of Vatican II by Pope Paul VI to foster greater participation by the faithful in Sacrament of Communion.  The extraordinary ministers support the ordinary ministers (the priests and deacons) to facilitate the sharing of the Eucharist with the assembly.

Who Can Serve

This is a very special and spiritually fulfilling ministry of dedicated parishioners who join because they feel called.   It is open to fully initiated adults and teens who meet the requirements of the parish and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, who complete the appropriate training, and are commissioned by the Pastor.

Extraordinary Ministers of Communion are needed for all Sunday and daily Masses and other special liturgies during the year.

How to Join

If you feel called to this ministry and would like to learn more about it or to simply express your interest in being notified of future offered training you should complete and submit a Liturgical Ministry Volunteer Interest Form (see right column).  Any questions you have about the ministry or joining should be directed to the Liturgy Coordinators.  Feel free to contact one of the Liturgy Coordinators to sign-up for the ministry as well.

If you are specifically interested in the Extraordinary Ministry to the Sick Ministry, you will be trained first as an EMHC in the normal training process and then as an EMHC to the Sick.  For more information about the EMHC to the Sick Ministry contact our Ministry to the Sick Coordinators on the right.
